Summer 2024 Internships

  • Associate in Research Software Engineering - Temporary, Requisition #:2024-18493
In the RSE Group, we collectively provide computational research expertise to multiple divisions within the University. As a central team of software experts, we are focused on improving the quality, performance, and sustainability of Princeton’s computational research software. Our group is committed to building collaborative environments in which the best software engineering practices are valued, and to sharing and applying cross-disciplinary computational techniques in new and emerging areas.
In this position, you will work alongside and under the mentorship of a professional Research Software Engineer to build, develop, and optimize research software used in cutting edge Princeton research projects. Projects are available in a number of domains, e.g.: Machine Learning, Computational Mathematics, Geosciences, and Civil Engineering. Please note: domain areas and specific projects are subject to change and may not be known until June.
This is a temporary summer position with approximate start and end dates of June 3 and August 2.

  • TigerData Metrics Developer - Temporary, Requisition #:2024-18476
The TigerData Metrics Developer will be responsible for partnering with the TigerData team to understand monitoring tools in use and necessary metrics for storage usage, performance, and growth trends. Using the appropriate tools (Python, Linux command line), the TigerData Metrics Developer will collect and organize defined data into a database, spreadsheet or file. If time allows, the TigerData Metrics developer will explore how to display the data in a coordinated dashboard to show current usage of TigerData storage services. This is a temporary summer position with approximate start and end dates of June 3 and August 2.

Full-Time Positions

  • Performance Tuning Analyst, Requisition #: 2023-18060
To apply, visit Princeton University Careers and search for the Req. 2023-18060 under staff positions.

The Performance Tuning Analyst will be an integral member of the Researcher Engagement group as you collaborate with researchers from across multiple domains to accelerate active research code and workflows. This involves meeting with research groups to understand goals and current limitations, identify code or research workflow practices that are in need of tuning, profile the code or analyze the workflow, and identify bottlenecks. With the results of this process, you’ll work both independently and in partnership with researchers to develop new research workflows, new algorithms, improve parallelization and/or vectorization, and ultimately reduce the time to solution. In many cases, the performance improvements you make will enable researchers working on high-profile projects to produce new results or tackle larger problems. In doing this work, you will be responsible for monitoring, routing, and managing support requests submitted using our general support ticketing system, but with a particular focus on code or workflow improvement opportunities. You will work in close partnership with Research Computing and other IT colleagues, faculty, staff, and students to enable and accelerate their research computing efforts. This position reports to the Director of Researcher Engagement.

  • Senior Manager Project and Service Portfolio  #: 2023-18059
To apply, visit Princeton University Careers and search for the Req. 2023-18059 under staff positions.

The Senior Manager for Project and Service Portfolio partners with the Associate CIO for Research Computing to help ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the department and staff responsible for providing research computing services for Princeton University. As senior manager, you would facilitate project planning processes to ensure projects are delivered with expected results and oversee service management practices within the department. The senior manager may also take on project leadership for major, complex initiatives that are key to the continued success of the department, data and computational science research, and the University. The senior manager provides leadership in the areas of project management and service management. The senior manager is also responsible for building collaborative relationships with department leadership and colleagues throughout the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Princeton University Library, and other organizations.

Applicants must apply online at Office of the Dean of Faculty and include a curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of research experience and interests, and a cover letter with the names and contact information of three references. The position is subject to the University's background check policy.

The postdoctoral research associate(s) will be part of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP, http://iris-hep.org/), which is developing innovative solutions to the computational and data challenges of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), which will collect data starting in 2029 and continue into the 2030's. The position(s) will play a leadership role in one of several R&D projects, including research into highly performant data analysis systems, the application of novel machine learning techniques to HEP, and/or the implementation of other innovative event reconstruction algorithms. The postdoctoral research associate(s) will also have the opportunity to do their own research on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.

For additional information, contact Dr. Peter Elmer ([email protected]). This position will be based at Princeton University, at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland or at Fermilab near Chicago, Illinois, subject to discussion with the principal investigator.
