Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies but is not considered “classified”. Social science research often involves working with CUI data and must follow standards and best practices built to safeguard sensitive information for its entire lifecycle.

This presentation will guide the researcher through various data use agreement requirements, including testing, approval, and storage/analysis; provide tips on managing secure data, and discuss platform possibilities.  Princeton has created the Citadel secure research infrastructure as a new storage/analysis solution. This presentation includes important dos and don’ts and info on where to get support when issues arise.

Topics will include:

  • Foundational Principles of Research and Information Security at the University
  • Data agreement requirements: From the basic to the most restricted
  • Gray areas around the policies - practical considerations
  • Case Studies – Merging public data, using commercial datasets
  • Various Storage Options
  • Citadel Overview & Demo

Target audience: This presentation is aimed primarily at social science researchers who must use (or want to use) secure environments in order to work with sensitive data at Princeton. No prior knowledge of the Citadel system or of any of the topics covered is assumed. Attendees will learn the basics of working with secure social science research data, including Princeton-specific resources..
